Alberta Regulator CEO Overrules Own Panel, Scraps Coal Hearing After Company Complains to Minister

EXCERPT: "After a coal company wrote to Alberta Energy and Minerals Minister Brian Jean demanding a public hearing be cancelled, the head of the province’s energy regulator Rob Morgan took the unprecedented step of overruling his own hearing commissioners to comply with the company’s request.

Morgan, appointed CEO six months ago, was copied on the letter from Valory Resources President Brian MacDonald, along with AER board chair Duncan Au.

Morgan is the former president and CEO of Strathcona Resources Ltd., a company with many dozens of abandoned oil and gas wells under AER regulation. Indigenous and environmental groups say his appointment “shatters any hope for a fair and effective oversight of the industry.”
