Shell’s Arctic drilling fleet is on the move. Shell’s drill ship Noble Discoverer, and the drilling rig Polar Pioneer are on their way to the Alaskan Arctic. But they won’t be able to slip into the Arctic quietly.

The Greenpeace ship Esperanza is crossing the Pacific on the tail of these Arctic villains. On board are six people who are determined to shine a white hot light on Shell’s reckless hunt for extreme Arctic oil. With them in spirit are millions of people from around the world who have joined the call for a global santuary in the Arctic.

We don’t know how this journey will end or whether we'll succeed, but we know that we are not sailing towards this challenge alone.

Stay tuned...

We have exciting news! The Inuit community of Clyde River has just achieved a major milestone in their struggle to stop offshore oil exploration in their Arctic home. The companies behind the proposal have cancelled their plan to start seismic testing this summer! That means the project is stalled at least until next year.

This milestone is a testament to the tenacity and bravery of Clyde River residents and mayor Jerry Natanine, who have consistently refused to sacrifice their fate to a project that failed to address even basic concerns for the marine environment and their way of life. It also reflects the tremendous outpouring of support from allies across Nunavut, Canada, and around the world, who stood behind the community as they took their fight to the courts in April. Over 300,000 people signed the online petition, while hundreds took to the streets outside the Toronto courtroom. Not even Big Oil can ignore that kind of people power.

Clyde River’s fight is gaining momentum. Within a few short months, their David vs. Goliath campaign became a symbol of the struggle to assert Inuit self-determination in the face of Arctic resource development. They are part of a growing movement of people across Canada who are standing up to the oil industry, like the delegation of Indigenous activists currently sailing along the west coast aboard the Greenpeace MY Esperanza,
[ https://www.savethearctic.org/en-CA/the ... __step__=1 ] building solidarity amongst coastal First Nations opposing oil, or the “kayaktivists” who just confronted a Shell oil rig in Seattle.

All these acts of resistance that are popping up all over Canada are evidence of the growing global rebellion against the dangers of Arctic oil. Rebellion comes in many forms; those who blockade oil rigs with their kayaks, those who take to the streets, those who sign petitions, those who write letters to their government, those who make bigger protests possible by generously donating money, those who do not accept the fate Big Oil wants to impose on them, those who fight greed with words, love and ideas, and those who believe that a cleaner future is possible.

Now the community of Clyde River is more determined than ever to protect their waters and the wildlife that they depend on; “kayaktivists” are paddling against giant corporations and inspiring millions around the world with their colourful demonstrations, and First Nations communities on the west coast are raising their voices, reminding us about what we are all fighting for and telling us that we should not give up. And we won’t.

Together we are strong, help us keep building the #PeopleVsOil movement.
