NB Youth Call on ALL Government Leaders for Immediate 25 year Moratorium on Gas and Oil Development in Wabanaki – New Brunswick – Canada
Lawsuit Claimants Seek Lawful Rebellion and ”Lobby For The Future”
The Youth claimants of the Peoples Lawsuit held a media conference in Cocagne, New Brunswick and unveiled their draft for a 25 year moratorium on fossil fuel operations, including hydraulic fracturing (fracking) for natural gas and oil. They want action on Climate Change, a healthy, sustainable economy and an end to fossil fuel subsidies and abuses of legal processes such as the injunctions, SLAPP lawsuits and military-style arrests against peaceful protesters in New Brunswick in 2013. They’re suing SWN Resources Canada and the New Brunswick and Canadian governments.
Letters with the draft moratorium text that were sent to the Wabanki, Canadian and New Brunswick governments were shared with those attending their media conference and with other young people all over the world via the internet and social media.
The youth have also asked elected Green Party politicians David Coon and Elizabeth May to present their moratorium to provincial and federal legislatures on behalf of Future Generations.
Several Peoples Lawsuit Plaintiffs were on hand with comments. Marcel White is unhappy about a regional fracking moratorium being discussed in the New Brunswick legislature, calling it “Pussyfooting, what part of NO Fracking don’t they understand?” Plaintiff Marc Bernard called the move “Crap, a weak effort that only pleases the companies, not the people.”
After being served with injunctions, hit with SLAPP lawsuits, arrested and insulted for engaging in peaceful protest during shale gas protests last year, the young people are finding other lawful ways to seek justice and redress. They are asking other youth to join their Lawful Rebellion. Marc Bernard adds, “We are asking young people, all people, to join us and support our lawsuit. We are claiming our right to a future. Fossil fuels are known to contribute to Climate Change. It’s insane! We want other youth to help us out – write letters, complain about the injustices we’re facing, support our cause by sharing on social media and especially by joining “Lobby for the Future” groups to counter powerful industry lobby groups who have been influencing local and national governments.”
After making presentations for the media, the event continued with open discussion. Willi Nolan, Plaintiff and Grandmother for the Peoples Lawsuit Youth, understands that the young people are not dividing their campaign according to age, “They’re facing problems that older generations won’t have to. I’m kind of ashamed of my generation, with so many indifferent to problems like climate change because they’ll be gone in a few years. These young people need us to stand up with them.” -30-
