News Release - September 23, 2013

Minister Responsible for First Nations, Métis and Northern Affairs Jim Reiter and his Alberta counterpart Thomas Lukaszuk, Deputy Premier and Minister of Enterprise and Advanced Education will be co-hosting Northern Development Ministers from across Canada this week in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

The Northern Development Ministers Forum is an annual event that was established in 2001. It is designed to raise awareness about the potential of the north, to showcase the north’s contributions to Canada’s fabric and to increase cooperation between governments.

“Saskatchewan’s north is a dynamic region that makes a major contribution to our economy,” Reiter said. “These forums are an opportunity to share ideas about how to continue to grow our northern regions across Canada in ways that strengthen their economies and contribute to building better lives for northerners.”

The ministers at the forum will discuss various topics including northern infrastructure requirements and the benefits of sustainable resource development. These topics are key elements to the future prosperity of Canada’s north.

The Northern Development Minsters Conference runs for three days. -30-
