Honorable Jean-Yves Duclos, President of the Treasury Board
Honorable Joyce Murray, Vice-President of the Treasury Board
Honorable Bardish Chagger, Member of the Treasury Board
Honorable Catherine McKenna, Member of the Treasury Board
Honorable Chrystia Freeland, Member of the Treasury Board
Honorable Jonathan Wilkinson, Member of the Treasury Board
Distinguished Mr. Duclos and members of the Treasury Board,

On September 21, 2020, we wrote to you as women leaders in community and indigenous settings, science, medicine, law and environmental protection, asking you to stop funding the development of new small modular nuclear reactors ( called PRM).

Canada is a member of an international radioactive waste treaty and must meet its legal obligations to minimize the production of radioactive waste. Federal funding for SMRs would be a waiver of its obligations under this treaty.

Today, other women leaders from all provinces and territories of Canada and from several First Nations sites are joining us. We strongly urge you to reject the new PRMs. The federal government is promoting SMRs as a silver bullet to deal with the climate emergency. This is completely wrong!

In fact, SMRs are certainly not a quick and effective action to deal with the climate emergency. They will not be able to reach the production phase for 10 or 15 years. It is too late to reduce greenhouse gases. It's gobbling up unnecessary money that would be better spent on low-carbon, low-carbon, off-the-shelf technologies.
