Thirty-eight abandoned uranium mine and mill sites dot the northern landscape near Uranium City and Lake Athabasca in northern Saskatchewan. The Gunnar Mine and Mill Site, the most complex site, consists of tailings, waste rock, underground workings, buildings and other structures. The Lorado Mill Site features tailings and a partially decommissioned mill. Thirty-six satellite mine sites that supplied the Lorado and Eldorado uranium mills are in various stages of decommissioning, presenting multiple public safety and environmental risks.

Since 2008, SRC has led Project CLEANS (CLEanup of Abandoned Northern Sites) on behalf of the Saskatchewan government under the leadership of project managers Tamara Yankovich, M.Sc., P.Eng., (Gunnar) and Dianne Allen, M.Eng., P.Eng., PMP, (Lorado), with the objective of transferring these sites to the Saskatchewan Institutional Control Program for long-term monitoring and maintenance.

Resource extraction necessarily entails remediation. This presentation spotlights two important Saskatchewan mine-cleanup projects!
