Devils lake not everything

So Dwight Williamson, Director of Manitoba's Water Management and Science Branch believes that discharge from Devils Lake may pose a significant risk of injury to health and property (Winnipeg Free Press June 22/07).

It is curious that Mr. Williamson does not attribute these same concerns to the dumping of liquid hog slurry waste on the surface of marginal lands in the Interlake.

If one were to visit the Interlake today you would find ditches and drains filled to capacity with run-off, making a bee-line to Lake Winnipeg. How does Mr. Williamson plan to keep hog slurry out of the lake?

The short answer is, he can't.

The incorporation of slurry into the soil is not a guarantee to keep it out of Lake Winnipeg, but dumping and leaving it on the surface virtually insures that it will reach Lake Winnipeg.

Mr. Williamson should be reminded that Manitoba's environmental concerns do not end at the Devils Lake outlet. Transfer of biota between watersheds is a concern, but so is the pollution that is created by the hog industry.
